Woodies are clean insects that provide nutrition and enrichment. Chickens thrive on chasing insects in the wild and our woodies are a valuable addition to their diet of premium chicken layer pellets or mash. 

Woodies or Wood Cockroaches (Nauphotea cinerea)

Australian Wood Roaches or Woodies are a natural and highly nutritious food for many animals including chickens, ducks, peacocks, pheasants, geese, turkeys, guinea fowl, reptiles and insectivorous mammals. They are very hygienic and are not known to carry disease organisms. In nature, woodies live in dry habitats under tree bark, leaf litter, or dead wood.

Woodies are an ideal addition to a diet of premium chicken layer pellets or mash. They are high in protein and contain beneficial roughage.

Storage & Care

Bulk Packs of woodies should be fed to your birds or immediately released into Pisces Cricket Keepers (more than one may be necessary) or a large, plastic, bulk storage box.

Woodies should be provided with fresh Aquaload and Gutload every few days. These water and food sources should be constantly available to maximize the longevity of the woodies and provide maximum nutrition to your animals. Woodie and Cricket Food is ideal for feeding daily to your insects.

The Woodies eat Gutload and then are consumed by your animals before the woodies digest it, providing a valuable boost of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals in addition to the nutrition in the woodies themselves. This makes the woodies "Gutloaded."

Woodies prefer to be between 20 to 25 degrees Celcius. Avoid poisonous fumes pesticides and cleaning supplies near Woodies.

Woodies need Gutload, Aquaload, and shelter to maximize their shelf-life. Cardboard Egg Flats or Insect Apartmentsare ideal to provide safe hiding places for your woodies.

Fluon Insect Barrier is useful for painting on storage box walls and food bowls to contain the insects.
